What is NMT Brain Mapping?
The Neurosequential Model (NMT) was developed by Dr Bruce Perry, MD, PhD, a renowned Child Psychiatrist from the United States, and has been well accepted and followed by many across the globe for more than fifteen years. It helps us understand how various influences at different stages of life may have affected the way a person’s brain developed and adapted. This in turn influences current brain functioning, which is commonly observed in behaviours, emotions, learning. It can also affect physical health.
The NMT brain map is done by taking a detailed life history and clinically assessing current function of various areas of the brain. Clinical assessment is done by asking questions and observations to the extent possible. For children, caregivers are able to provide much of the information. This information is fed into a software application maintained by the Neurosequential Network. The software gives an output in the form of a graph and a representation of the brain as an upside-down triangle, colour coded to show various levels of functioning of each area. It then gives recommendations for lifestyle and therapeutic interventions that are suited for the individual. Using this guide, tailored recommendations is made for the person to use to implement these strategies.
